Kiln Creek Animal Care: A Standout for Anxious and Exotic Pets

Kiln Creek Animal Care received some of the strongest support in the local discussion.

One owner specifically recommended it because it is a Fear Free Certified practice, which can matter a lot if you have a dog or cat that begins trembling the moment the carrier appears. Another local said they take their rabbits there.

Both claims check out. Kiln Creek is officially Fear Free Certified and Cat Friendly Certified, and its veterinarians treat a surprisingly broad range of exotic animals, including rabbits, birds, reptiles, amphibians and small mammals.

Kiln Creek also offers something particularly useful locally: scheduled urgent-care hours Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

That combination makes Kiln Creek one of the most versatile recommendations from the thread.

Colony Animal Hospital: A Longtime Newport News Practice

Two people independently spoke highly of Colony Animal Hospital, including one owner with a 12-year-old pet and another who had used the practice while living in Newport News.

Colony has considerably deeper local roots than you might guess: the practice says it has been serving the area since 1962. It is also AAHA-accredited and treats dogs and cats as well as exotic and pocket pets. Services range from routine wellness care to surgery and behavioral counseling.

For someone who specifically wants a long-established independent local practice, Colony is an obvious one to investigate.

Hilton Animal Hospital: Independent Care in the Hilton Area

One Redditor simply described Hilton Animal Hospital as the best veterinary practice they had ever used. That is obviously one person’s experience, but Hilton also came up positively in another recent Newport News discussion, where residents praised both its care and pricing.

Hilton is a privately owned, full-service animal hospital on Warwick Boulevard. Its current services include general medicine, dentistry, diagnostics, ultrasound, dermatology, oncology services and several forms of surgery.

That makes Hilton especially interesting for pet owners who would prefer an independent neighborhood practice instead of a national veterinary chain.

York Veterinary Hospital: Worth the Drive for Some Newport News Pet Owners

York Veterinary Hospital isn’t technically in Newport News, but that didn’t stop multiple residents from recommending it.

One person said they had used York Veterinary Hospital for more than 20 years, including with two dogs that had serious medical problems. Another specifically recommended Dr. Julie Godfrey.

We were able to verify that Dr. Godfrey is currently listed as a veterinarian on York Veterinary Hospital’s team page.

The hospital is a full-service practice on George Washington Memorial Highway in Yorktown, so it may be particularly convenient for people living in northern Newport News, Denbigh or Lee Hall.

Grafton Animal Hospital: Another Strong Choice for Exotic Pets

Grafton Animal Hospital was recommended for regular dogs and cats in the discussion, but its services go considerably further.

Grafton is an AAHA-accredited, full-service animal hospital that sees dogs and cats as well as birds, exotic animals and pocket pets. It also offers boarding, grooming and doggie daycare.

That makes Grafton another useful option if your definition of “pet” extends beyond dogs and cats.

It’s located just north of Newport News in Yorktown.

Poquoson Veterinary Hospital: One of the Broadest Exotic-Pet Lists

Poquoson Veterinary Hospital: Russ Bailey, DVM was recommended without much elaboration in the Reddit thread, but its website reveals why it deserves a place on this list.

The practice treats dogs and cats, but also explicitly lists birds, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, rodents, snakes, frogs, bearded dragons, chameleons, geckos, iguanas, turtles and tortoises among its patients.

It also offers diagnostics, dentistry, surgery, laser therapy, boarding and grooming. The hospital says it has served Poquoson and the surrounding area since 1996.

If you own an unusual pet, Poquoson Veterinary Hospital and Kiln Creek should probably both be on your call list.

Mercury Animal Hospital: A Privately Owned Hampton Option

A commenter described Mercury Animal Hospital as compassionate and friendly.

The practice is across the city line in Hampton, but could be convenient for people in southern Newport News. Mercury says it has operated since 1972 and remains privately owned. It treats dogs, cats and pocket pets and offers medical care, general and orthopedic surgery, dentistry, preventive care, boarding, daycare and grooming.

Banfield Pet Hospital Near Patrick Henry Mall

One resident recommended a veterinarian at the Banfield Pet Hospital inside PetSmart near Patrick Henry Mall, particularly appreciating that treatment costs were discussed as care progressed.

The location itself is current and verified at 12142 Jefferson Avenue. Banfield provides preventive care, wellness exams, vaccinations, microchipping and other routine veterinary services.

The Reddit recommendation specifically named a Dr. Lee, but Banfield’s current public team page does not list a veterinarian by that name. Because veterinary staff can change, we’d recommend calling the hospital if you’re specifically trying to see that doctor rather than assuming the Reddit information is still current.

VCA Boulevard Animal Hospital

A resident also recommended VCA Boulevard Animal Hospital and praised its staff, although another commenter said the practice had become expensive. That’s anecdotal rather than a useful apples-to-apples price comparison, but it is worth knowing when you’re calling around.

The hospital itself is verified, although the Reddit description placing it “off Warwick” is a little imprecise. VCA Boulevard is at 12620 Nettles Drive.

It treats dogs and cats and offers preventive care, dentistry, surgery, radiology, wellness exams and boarding.

So, Which Newport News Vet Should You Call?

There isn’t one objectively “best veterinarian in Newport News,” and the Reddit discussion actually makes that clear.

For an anxious pet, Kiln Creek Animal Care is particularly interesting because of its Fear Free certification. For rabbits, reptiles, birds or other exotic pets, Kiln Creek, Grafton and Poquoson all explicitly provide exotic-animal care. If you want a long-established independent Newport News practice, Colony and Hilton stand out. And if you’re willing to drive a little farther north, York Veterinary Hospital attracted some of the strongest long-term recommendations in the discussion.

The smartest approach may be to pick two or three that fit your pet’s needs, call them, and ask about new-patient availability, exam fees and how they handle same-day sick visits before you need one.

One final distinction: Peninsula Animal Referral Center (PARC) also appeared in the discussion, but only in a negative anecdotal comment, so we have not included it among the community recommendations above. PARC is a real Yorktown emergency and specialty hospital; for an emergency, choosing care should be based on your pet’s immediate needs and current availability rather than a single online comment.
