The 7 Best Free Library Story Times in Williamsburg

Williamsburg Regional Library runs its free story times at two libraries, the Williamsburg Library downtown and the James City County Library, plus a weekly community session. The schedule is built so the same program alternates between the two buildings on different days. If a session is on the wrong side of town, it’s usually at the other library the next morning.

For babies (ages 0–2): lapsit, then stay and play

Baby Lapsit Storytime is a 15-minute session of songs and rhymes with your baby in your lap. Baby Stay & Play follows it in the same room for another half hour of unstructured play, so a 15-minute program becomes a 45-minute outing.

For toddlers: Toddler Storytime

A 25-minute session the library lists for ages 0 to 5. Its short length suits kids who aren’t ready for a half-hour program.

For preschoolers (ages 3–5): Preschool Storytime

A half-hour session for ages 3 to 5.

For a longer family morning: Mondays at Frink

Mondays@Frink: Family Reading Adventure Storytime runs 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Abram Frink, Jr. Community Center, for ages 0 to 5. It’s the longest session on the calendar. It suits families with more than one small child, or anyone who wants a whole morning rather than a quick stop.

For Spanish: Cena con Cuentos

Cena con Cuentos is a Spanish-language storytime for ages 0 to 5. It runs Tuesday evenings, 5:30 to 7 PM, at the Stryker Center (rooms 127 and 128). It’s the only evening option on the schedule, which also makes it the one to try if both parents work days.

How to choose

Pick by age first, then by building. The library alternates its programs between the two buildings, so most families can get a session every week whichever library is closer. Nothing runs on Thursday or Friday mornings in the current schedule, so plan for Monday through Wednesday. Schedules change between seasons, so check the library’s event calendar the week you go.
