Karate, Taekwondo, and Jiu-Jitsu for Peninsula Kids

Evening slots dominate, but a few Peninsula schools break the mold — noon classes in Yorktown, a Sunday session at SHIFT, and a 6am start at Baeplex.

Most martial arts schools on the Peninsula run kids’ classes in the same tight window — 4:30 to 8:30 in the evening, Monday through Thursday — so the real choice for a parent usually isn’t karate versus jiu-jitsu, it’s whether a school also offers something outside that crowded slot.

The after-school regulars

SHIFT Combat Sports has the deepest review base on the Peninsula — 246 reviews at a perfect 5.0 — and backs up the evening classes (Mon–Fri, 4:30–9:00 PM) with a Saturday morning slot (9:30 AM–12:00 PM) and a Sunday evening class, which is rare. Breakaway Jiu Jitsu & Self-Defense keeps the longest overall hours of anyone on this list, open most weekdays from as early as 6:00 AM through 8:30 PM and both weekend mornings (8:00 AM–2:00 PM), so it’s the one to call if your family’s schedule doesn’t fit a normal week. Cheeseman Martial Arts Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (4.9 from 141 reviews) adds a midday class Monday and Wednesday, 11:30 AM–1:00 PM, on top of weekday evenings.

When after-school doesn’t work

If pickup or a sibling’s practice eats into the 4:30 slot, a few schools run classes at lunchtime instead. Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu Yorktown holds a noon class every single weekday (12:00–1:30 PM) in addition to evenings, plus Saturday (10:00–11:30 AM) and Sunday (11:00 AM–1:00 PM) — useful for homeschool families who’d rather train before the after-school rush. New World Academy also runs midday classes on weekdays alongside its evening sessions. Siren Jiu Jitsu keeps a tighter, more particular schedule — lunch classes Tuesday and Friday (11:30 AM–12:30 PM), evenings only Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and a Saturday afternoon class (2:00–3:30 PM) — worth checking before you plan around it.

Weekend-only and weekend-heavy

A handful of schools are built around Saturday. World Martial Arts (5.0 from 79 reviews) meets Saturday mornings 9:00 AM–12:00 PM with no Sunday class at all, while Green’s Martial Arts (4.8 from 206 reviews) runs Saturday 8:30 AM–12:00 PM and is closed Fridays entirely. East Wind Academy of Martial Arts is similar — weekday evenings plus a Saturday session (10:00 AM–1:00 PM), dark Fridays and Sundays. Modern American Mixed Martial Arts flips the usual pattern: closed Saturday, but open Sunday morning (10:00 AM–12:00 PM), which is worth knowing if Saturday sports already own your weekend.

Traditional karate storefronts

For families set on karate specifically, Shotokan Karate of Hampton Roads trains all five weeknights (5:00–8:30 PM) plus a long Saturday block (10:30 AM–3:30 PM), more total weekly hours than most other karate schools here. Brian Hobson Karate Studios (5.0 from 113 reviews) runs Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday morning (9:30 AM–1:00 PM). Frank Hargrove Karate @ The Dojo keeps the most daytime hours of the group, open mid-morning on several weekdays in addition to evenings, which helps if you need a make-up class outside the usual after-school rush. Axsom Martial Arts and Mason Martial Arts Academy both stick to a straightforward weekday-evening-only schedule, no weekend classes.

If you want something other than karate or BJJ

Hampton Roads Kendo Dojo / Smart Ninja Club is the one school on the Peninsula offering kendo, with a kids’ ninja-branded program running Tuesday through Thursday afternoons into evening (3:30–8:30 PM) — a real option if your kid has already decided karate looks boring. Boyd’s Defensive Arts (5.0 from 10 reviews) meets just three nights a week, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 6:15–7:45 PM, a lighter commitment for families not ready for a five-day-a-week program. Baeplex (4.9 from 104 reviews) opens as early as 7:00 AM on weekdays and runs a Saturday morning class too, giving early risers a slot most other schools don’t offer.

The common thread across the Peninsula: evening classes are everywhere, but lunchtime, early-morning, and Sunday options are scarce enough that they’re worth building a decision around if your family’s week doesn’t run on the standard after-school clock.
